SEPAWA CONTINUES ON ITS ROAD TO SUCCESS
Structure and Objectives
With more than 1.200 members, SEPAWA – Soap, Perfume and Detergent Experts Association is one of the largest independent expert associations for these industries in Europe. The objective of the association is to encourage scientific and practical exchange of experience on an international scale as well as the education and further training of all experts working in these fields.
The SEPAWA offers ordinary membership for individuals and corporate membership for companies. However, in addition to these, sustaining membership for companies is also possible.
The members of the association include experts with technical, scientific as well as economic interests, but also experts from municipal and scientific institutions. Altogether, today SEPAWA (national and international) counts 1.001 ordinary, 209 corporative and 9 sustaining members. The number of ordinary members registered in Germany amounts to 741, in Switzerland to 136 and in the section Benelux counties there are 69. The section Austria has 49 and the section North 98 ordinary members.
An activity-field survey among members in Germany in 2006 revealed what kind of industries the ordinary members are affiliated with, as shown in the chart below.
| Industry | Proportion (%) |
| Detergents and Cleaners | 45 |
| Cosmetics | 21 |
| Perfumery | 18 |
| Chemical-Technical Applications | 11 |
| Others (soap production, control laboratory, consulting, dermatology, students) | 5 |
Furthermore, Germany is divided into National Committees (North/West, Central, South/East) and various specialized groups as well as the German Association of Perfumers (DGP) within the SEPAWA. The specialized groups focus on specific subjects. There are specialized groups for “Professional Cleaning and Care” (PRP), for “Applied Cosmetics” and for questions concerning “Legislative, Environment and Consumer” (LUV).
For more than 50 years the central event has been the annual SEPAWA-Congress, which in the meantime includes the “European Detergents Conference” in collaboration with the GDCh specialized group “Detergent Chemistry”. Thus, approximately 110 exhibitors, various institutes and authorities participated at the 54th SEPAWA-Congress in Würzburg from October 10-12, 2007. Over 1.400 experts and professionals participated at this event. The SEPAWA-Congress is therefore the biggest congress in Europe for the detergent, cleaner, cosmetics and perfumery industry.
SEPAWA Office with Specific Tasks
The SEPAWA branch office which is the main contact address and responsible for the administration, is located in the building of the Verlag für chemische Industrie H. Ziolkowsky GmbH in Augsburg and works with the latest IT-equipment. It is the place where service is provided for all the members and where the various lecture events of the national and specialized groups are organized and finalized.
One of the main organizational responsibilities includes the preparation for the SEPAWA-Congress. From the choice of lecture themes to the planning of the agenda, the service and care for speakers and for companies and institutions that participate in the extensive poster exhibition, there are several tasks that must be addressed in detail. The necessary time and effort for this has increased significantly due to the rise in the number of members and visitors. The number of congress-visitors jumped from about 1.000 in 2003 to 1.400 in 2007.
The publications that are released after each special event and activity are published in the SÖFW-Journal, the trade paper of SEPAWA, as well as on the SEPAWA homepage.
All employees of the SEPAWA branch office carry out their tasks with great commitment in order to continue having a share in the success of SEPAWA.
