The skin barrier plays a crucial role in protecting against external influences. Dry skin suffers from a disturbed lipid balance, which leads to moisture loss and increased sensitivity. The study presented here, investigates the efficacy of a lipid-rich skin oil in improving skin hydration and epidermal barrier function after a short application period of 3 days. In a controlled, randomized study, 32 subjects with dry skin used a skin oil twice a day for three days on a forearm test site in comparison to an untreated control. The performed methods included skin hydration measurements as well as the determination of the lipid lamellar length in the intercellular space using electron microscopy. After just three days of application, there was a significant increase in skin hydration of 8% compared to the untreated control area. The length of the lipid lamellae in the intercellular space as a marker for barrier integrity improved in the stratum corneum significantly by 103%, indicating a structural regeneration of the skin barrier. The skin oil examined has been shown to improve skin moisture and strengthen the lipid structure of the skin barrier. The results prove the effectiveness of lipid-rich formulations for supporting dry skin. The product also demonstrated excellent tolerability, even on sensitive skin. These findings underscore the importance of targeted care for lasting skin health and offer new perspectives for innovative skin care concepts.
