Designing Bacillus-Based Cleaners: From Formulation Sustainability and Compatibility to Surface Activity

Microbial-based cleaning products are gaining traction in home care and industrial and institutional (I&I) cleaning, but broader adoption remains limited by questions around stability, compatibility with probiotics, and efficacy. Therefore, this study describes the development and validation of a Bacillus spore-based hard-surface cleaner designed to combine immediate cleaning with measurable long-term performance.
Probiotic formulations present significant challenges in maintaining stability and viability throughout the product’s intended shelf life. Ensuring that enough live microorganisms remain active over a 24-month period requires careful optimization of formulation parameters, including strain selection, different pH ranges, concentration and balance of the individual ingredients, preservation systems and packaging technologies. Recent advancements in formulation science have enhanced the preservation of probiotic viability, enabling consistent long-term stability supported by scientific & real-condition data, thereby ensuring both product efficacy and regulatory compliance.
Additionally, to validate the expected functionality, the performance of the final formulation was evaluated using a combination of standardised laboratory assays, third-party IKW-based tile testing, and field studies. The results demonstrated that Bacillus spores, after the product application, successfully adhered to representative hard surfaces, persisted, and germinated in the presence of organic residues. Independent growth-dynamics profiling showed earlier and stronger activation than market competitors, underlining the importance of formulation–probiotic compatibility. Moreover, an independent laboratory study demonstrated that the immediate cleaning performance on standardised CFT/IKW soils matched a conventional benchmark. After multiple days of incubation, the microbial formulation achieved an additional 20–30% soil removal on representative soils, indicating a measurable long-lasting contribution beyond the initial wipe.
Overall, the results show that well-designed microbial cleaners can unite short-term efficacy, long-term functionality, and formulation sustainability, providing a scientifically grounded route for broader acceptance in home care and I&I cleaning.
