Social responsibility is a decisive factor in natural ingredient sourcing, as sustainability expectations evolve in cleaning and cosmetics. Carnauba wax is valued for its technical performance across personal care, home care, food, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications, and its long-term continuity depends on seasonal harvesters, rural communities, and the conservation of wild carnauba palms in the Caatinga biome of Northeast Brazil.
This poster presents how companies can turn social sustainability commitments into practical improvements through the Initiative for Responsible Carnauba (IRC). Since 2018, IRC has provided a precompetitive platform for supply chain actors to strengthen traceability, improve working conditions, support labour rights, protect biodiversity, and build confidence in a supply chain that relies on skilled manual work that needs to be passed on to next generations.
Field engagement shows the relevance of social sustainability and compliance in carnauba wax sourcing. Reported progress includes improved harvesting conditions through support for shelter, drinking water, sanitation, accommodation, alongside appropriate personal protective equipment and safety-audited leaf beating machines. IRC engagement with labour authorities also supports clarification of social protection rules helping reduce barriers to formal employment. These actions support more dignified work while helping companies address due diligence expectations and continuity risks.
Responsible carnauba sourcing offers, for cleaning and cosmetics brands, concrete example of how ingredient innovation can address both performance and people. Mapped supply chains, supplier engagement, on field-level actions funded by supply chain partners and independent verification provide credible evidence for local impact of responsible sourcing commitments and their connection to worker well-being, rural livelihoods, and ecosystem stewardship.
The poster is a call to action for ingredient users, formulators and brands to integrate social sustainability into sourcing decisions, engage collaboratively through initiatives such as IRC, and help ensure that ingredients such as carnauba wax remain a trusted, responsible, future-ready and available natural ingredient.
